Bent on total word domination
Steve started out life as a newspaper reporter at the Peoria Journal Star, but he had to give up that life because he refused to become addicted to nicotine. The peer pressure that arose from being the only nonsmoker in the newsroom was too much for his delicate emotions.
After leaving Peoria, he responded to an ad in The Dragon and was hired as an editor at TSR in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. He actually moved all of his earthly possessions to Wisconsin with only two trips in his VW Beetle. The first trip moved his clothing and personal affects, the second trip was given over entirely to his stereo.
He stayed at TSR for 16 years, through wage reductions, layoffs, changes in management, even bad romances. During that time he was involved in nearly every aspect of game design, development, and production. Eventually he became senior editor, managing editor, and creative director of AD&D. When the company moved to Seattle, he refused to go, screaming, “I’ll leave Wisconsin when you pry my cold, dead fingers from this cold, dead landscape!”
Eventually, however, he wound up in Seattle anyway, divorced and poorer than when he started. He loves the climate, however, and now works as a web producer for True North Consulting, managing web sites for Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast. His two current projects are the Avalon Hill website and the D&D Miniatures website.
