Doodle-A-Day Hits #1,000

on July 1st, 2009

I hope you’ll pardon me while I do a bit of blatant self-congratulations … but I hit something of a milestone over at my sketch-blog, Doodle-A-Day.com. Today I posted my 1,000th doodle!

Now, I know that this isn’t the same as reaching that same level with a full-on web comic. First of all, there’s no real unifying theme to these comics … they’re just images lifted straight out of my notebooks. Some are gags, some are character studies, but most are just the random brain fluff that flows through my hand and out the tip of my pen. I don’t make a special effort to produce images for the site … I just make a point of posting a new image every morning. That doesn’t really make it any less a thing than other web comics … but it DOES make it a bit of a different thing.

Since October 29, 2006, I’ve only missed ONE day, and I’ve had a handful of days where I posted “bonus doodles” (which is why I’ve reached 1,000 doodles in slightly less than a thousand days). That fact still kind of stuns me a bit. In fact, when I think about it, the thing that amazes me most how much this has become part of my DAILY life (since I still haven’t automated the posting process).

The one thing I haven’t done for Doodle-A-Day.com, despite being proud of the site and what I’ve done, is PROMOTE it. That’s something that I’d like to change in the coming months. I AM proud of what I’ve accomplished here and I’d LIKE to share it with a wider audience. The only thing really standing in my way is … well … ME. In the coming few months, I hope to find ways to spread the word.

I ALSO would like to migrate the site over to a WordPress format so that I CAN begin to automate the process.

But that’s all pie in the sky. For TODAY I’m just going to enjoy this little milestone.

1,000 doodles.

There are worse legacies one could have.

Tomorrow I start my march toward #2,000!
