Bent on total word domination
Do you like ghost stories? Badass cars? Classic rock? I do, and it’s why I pushed for over a year to acquire the license to publish a game based on the TV show Supernatural. For those of you who haven’t seen it, you’re missing out. The short version is that it’s the tale of two brothers who drive around the country in a ‘67 Chevy Impala, hunting ghosts, monsters, and any other evil, supernatural thing and stop it from hurting anyone ever again. We’ve had four seasons with Sam and Dean Winchester and have at least one more on its way this fall.
If you’ve read my older blogs, you know that I’m a junkie for ghost stories, folklore, cryptozoology, and urban legends. One early thing I loved about Supernatural was its use of real-world folklore for its tales of ghosts, demons, wendigos, shtrigas, and werewolves. Another thing that tickles me is that even though it’s a pretty macho horror television series it has a rabid female fan-following.
We used the Cortex System game rules for this one, same as Serenity, Demon Hunters, and Battlestar Galactica. Here we tweaked very little of the core rules, focusing instead on a good presentation of the supernatural elements along with the use of fear and horror both from the rules and the Game Master side of things. We have a chapter called “The Supernatural” which introduces major types of foes (ghosts and demons being the most-often encountered on the show) along other nasties such as the wendigo and shapeshifter. While there are no specific creature creation rules, it’s a piece of cake to modify or create new monsters just by seeing the framework and presentation we set up. “The Mundane” chapter has stock characters at home in any horror film, along with plenty of great locations to set a new story. Full character creation rules mean you’re not just stuck with Sam and Dean, though the major show characters are there if you need ‘em for anything.
Modern horror is one of my favorite genres to run, and this is “heroic” modern horror where the heroes have the knowledge and skills to have a fighting chance against the evil skulking around in the dark. So get the game, kick evil’s ass, crank up some tunes, and have a few drinks, and have some fun!
