Bent on total word domination
Somehow, even though I KNOW they are only a week apart, on Boxing Day the suddenness of the impending new year always seems to take me by surprise. Less than a week now, and it will be 2009. I hardly feel DONE with 2008!
There’s a lot I want to try to get done before I take down my calendars and replace SOME of them. For the last few years I’ve used calendars as a focal point of the decorations in my apartment … carefully picking artists or subjects that I KNOW I’ll want to see all year ’round … and then guaranteeing that there will be subtle changes in my living quarters as I flip the pages at the first of every month. Besides the large wall calendar over my desk, in 2008 I had an Edward Gorey calendar and a Far Side calendar in the living room. The year before I had a Charles Addams calendar, a travel poster calendar, a Hokusai calendar, and an Gashlycrumb Tinies calendar on various walls around the apartment.
This year, though, I have not bought any decorative calendars … just the wall calendar for work purposes. In part this is due to budgetary restraints … but mostly it’s that I feel fairly certain that I’ll be moving in the early part of ‘09, and I don’t know how many calendars I’ll need wherever I land.
So, one of the things I’m giving thought to is what to replace my current calendars with. I have an abundance of posters, prints, and other decorative items that I’d like one day to get framed … perhaps I’ll put some of them up in their current states. Perhaps I’ll go back to some of my old calendars (I often keep them because I like the images so much) and put up a few choice months from years past. I really don’t know.
In the meanwhile, though, I have a bunch of tasks I want to get done before next Thursday. If I succeed, I will even have an announcement or two to make here regarding a thing or two YOU can look for in the coming year. Doesn’t THAT sound exciting?
In the meanwhile, good luck to all of YOU in getting your 2008 affairs in order. There’s a whole new year about to stretch before us … and it’s probably best to start it with as little old business as possible still nipping at your heels.
